Choosing the right wallpaper paste for walls will determine both how your project looks and how long it lasts. Even the most expensive wallpaper can lose all its appeal if the paste you choose doesn’t match its material, or if you, for example, use it incorrectly. We, as a company specializing in wallpaper installation in offices and residential premises for more than 20 years, will share our best practices for choosing paste below.
So, what is the best wallpaper glue? Generally speaking, there are several manufactures of wallpaper adhesive on the American market that guarantee the safety of their formulas, increased adhesion for different types of materials from which wallpaper can be made:
Now, let’s consider the existing types of wallpaper adhesives – your choice should depend on understanding their specifics:
Let our experts guide you. We’ll help you select the right adhesive for your walls and apply your wallpaper flawlessly.
Knowing what pastes can be, let’s consider their compatibility with specific types of wallpaper.
The best wallpaper paste for vinyl wallpaper is moisture-resistant and has increased adhesion thanks to its heavy-duty formula with anti-fungal additives that will prolong the life of your renovation work and, among other things, protect the walls from mold.
Natural reed- or jute-made wallpaper is characterized by increased hygroscopicity, so to prevent it from swelling, the adhesive must contain methylcellulose. Moreover, it’s essential to apply it in a thin layer to protect the wallpaper from getting wet from the inside. Finally, you need to make sure that the paste doesn’t contain aggressive components that can change the wallpaper color.
Non-woven wallpaper is lightweight, breathable, and easy to install. They are usually used with non-woven glue, which is applied only to the wall and, thus, prevents the material from stretching.
Embossed vinyl or anaglypta wallpaper requires glue, the consistency of which allows it not to penetrate into the micro-voids in the material’s texture. That’s why the best wallpaper adhesive for walls of such a type is a thick, thixotropic formula that can preserve the original relief.
For too dense materials, including textiles, multi-level vinyl, etc., heavy-duty class wallpaper pastes are optimal, which require long-lasting drying with ventilation. This consistency will help you carefully adjust the edges without losing adhesion.
Fabric wallpaper requires very careful handling, using colorless glue that doesn’t leave stains and has moderate humidity (otherwise, you can easily deform the fibers). In these cases, your best option is a stain-free paste with strong adhesion.
It is very easy to accidentally damage flock wallpaper during installation, so you will need glue that does not soak through the material and does not change the color of the pile.
Now, a few words about choosing glue for non-standard materials.

Damp walls or walls in buildings with high humidity are problematic to deal with, even for experienced wallpaper installers, and, in general, this feature significantly affects the choice of paste as well. In particular, the best wallpaper paste for damp walls should be characterized by increased adhesion, moisture resistance, and also contain fungicidal additives to prevent mold formation under the coating. Another professional recommendation is to treat the walls with an antiseptic primer before installing the wallpaper.

In the bathroom, the temperature and humidity levels constantly change. Therefore, for such rooms, it’s reasonable to choose PVA-based adhesives or acrylic formulas with high moisture resistance and antifungal components that form a dense protective film between the wall and the wallpaper, thereby minimizing the risk of peeling off the latter.

On uneven or textured walls, it’s better to use pastes with a thick consistency and thixotropic properties – they perfectly fill the recesses and reliably fix the wallpaper. For more complex surfaces, such as rough plaster or decorative stone, adhesives with polymer additives will be optimal, as they provide elasticity even after drying.

As for the best wallpaper paste for ceilings, it should have increased stickiness and not slip – these properties will not allow the wallpaper to slide under its own weight. That’s why you should choose quick-drying, but lightweight formulas so that they can be applied in a thin but durable layer.

In this section, we’d like to describe the best way to apply wallpaper adhesive.
Specifically, to install paper and textile wallpaper, you need to apply the paste directly to the canvas and leave it to soak in for 5-10 minutes. As for non-woven wallpaper, the paste has to be applied only to the wall – this helps to avoid deformation of the canvas. For wallpaper on ceilings and relief surfaces, the glue is applied in a thin layer, in one direction, without gaps, for example, using a roller. Finally, when installing wallpaper in rooms with high humidity, it’s additionally recommended to use a moisture-resistant primer.
Finally, let’s talk briefly about glue for repair work.
Glue for wallpaper edge restoration should set quickly and have increased thickness so as not to spread. Therefore, the best choice would be glues in tubes with a narrow spout – they are precise in application and won’t allow you to accidentally stain the front wallpaper side.
Transparent glues that won’t expose your wallpaper to the risk of color change and won’t leave shiny marks are ideal for repairing seams. Usually, the best glue for wallpaper seams is based on acrylic or methylcellulose and is also characterized by fast drying and elasticity, which is important to compensate for micro-movements of the walls and avoid the seam’s disclosure.
Choosing the right wallpaper paste is as important as choosing the wallpaper itself. As a wallpaper installation company with 20+ years of experience, we know very well how an unsuitable paste can spoil the wallpaper’s appearance or shorten its life. Therefore, we strongly recommend taking into account the recommendations above so that your wallpaper will please you for many years to come.
You can buy a universal wallpaper glue suitable for most types of wallpaper, such as paper, non-woven, or vinyl. However, in practice, you may get an unsatisfactory result, as each type of wallpaper has its own specifics: for example, the best paste for vinyl wallpaper is quick-drying and has increased adhesion, while fabric and flock wallpaper need compositions that won’t leave stains. As for heavy relief ones, reinforced formulas with polymer additives will be optimal. Finally, if we talk about universal glue, it’s suitable for light or medium-weight wallpaper only. However, if you want to achieve better durability, you should choose wallpaper adhesive for a specific type of material. This way, you’ll be able to reduce the risk of peeling, deformation, and stains on the front side.
Yes, for bathrooms and rooms with high humidity, such as kitchens or basements, you should use a special moisture-resistant adhesive for wallpaper. Such ones usually have an acrylic base or contain PVA; it can also include additives with a fungicidal effect, which is necessary to prevent fungus growth and mold under the wallpaper. Such a glue composition creates a dense, moisture-proof film between the wall and the coating material. Before you start the wallpaper installation process in the bathroom, you need to treat the walls with an antiseptic primer and ensure the ventilation works properly. And vice versa, if you choose regular glue, you may encounter the fact that over time, the wallpaper will begin to peel off, and an unpleasant odor will appear.
Grasscloth is a highly porous material that easily absorbs moisture, so it can deform over time. Thus, a conventional wallpaper paste, primarily water-based, can lead to darkening of the material, its stretching, or staining. That’s why, for this type of wallpaper, you should use special, thick glues with neutral viscosity. For example, they can be starch-based or ready-made acrylic compounds. Moreover, when you install this type of wallpaper, you need to apply the adhesive only to the wall (and not on the wallpaper itself) to protect the color and texture of the material. We also recommend you try to glue a small piece of wallpaper to ensure the wallpaper paste is suitable for the specifics of your work.
The drying time of paste for wallpaper depends on many factors, such as its composition, layer thickness, type of wallpaper, and room conditions. On average, this process takes from twelve to forty-eight hours. For example, light-weight wallpaper dries after twelve hours, while heavy vinyl wallpaper takes up to two days to dry completely. Humidity and temperature also play a big role during the gluing process – the glue drying may take longer if your room is cool and damp. So, be sure to avoid drafts and temperature changes for the first forty-eight hours so that the glue can set evenly. Moreover, you should wait at least three days before installing furniture close to the wall.
If you notice that the edges of the wallpaper have started to peel away from the wall, you should immediately fix the problem, as dust and moisture may get under them. To repair, you should choose a special wallpaper adhesive to use on edges only – it comes with a narrow spout for easy pouring. You need to carefully insert the glue under the wallpaper area that has peeled away, then use a smoothing roller or soft cloth to remove any excess adhesive with movements from the center to the edges. If you are working with vinyl or textile wallpaper, it’s better to choose a glue that won’t leave marks and won’t change the color of the material. Also, before applying the glue, you should ensure no mold or bubbles under the wallpaper – otherwise, the area will have to be re-glued entirely.
Before installing new wallpaper, you should remove the old glue from the walls. If you don’t do this, the new wallpaper may not hold well or quickly fall off. To remove the old glue, wet down the walls with a solution of warm water and a mild detergent. You can also buy a special solvent for wallpaper glue. The paste will soften 10-15 minutes after you start its dissolving, so you can start to scrape it off with a spatula. If there are traces of mold on the wall, you should treat them with an antiseptic. When you clean the walls of the glue, you will need to level and prime them; this way, you’ll boost adhesion and prevent defects.
Of course, you can mix the glue yourself, especially if you are going to install simple-to-use wallpaper (like paper or vinyl). For this, you may use methylcellulose-based powdered glue. At the same time, if you are dealing with textile wallpapers or those made from natural materials, you should choose ready-made adhesive formulas as they have the specific consistency, added bonding agents, and precisely measured proportions. If you make a mistake when making the glue yourself, this can lead to the wallpaper drying unevenly, stains on its surface, or its peeling off. Thus, choosing ready-made glue will save you time and nerves.
